Differences stall Cabinet expansion

Four days after assuming office, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai is still finding it difficult to form a moderate-sized Cabinet, thanks to the row within his own party, the UCPN (Maoist) and the his key coalition partners—the parties in the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM).
On Wednesday, the Maoist party entrusted the task of finalising the names of candidates joining the Cabinet on party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

However, party sources said Gajurel’s chances of bagging the posts of the deputy PM and foreign minister are high.

The chances of Parliamentary Party Chief Whip Dev Gurung joining the Cabinet is reportedly slim, as he already occupies an important post. The party has a one-person-one-post policy.

Likewise, portfolio differences continue to dog the parties in the Morcha.

However, Morcha sources said they could trade the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare with either the Labour Ministry or the Ministry of Land Reforms.
